International
The Maurice Wilkins Centre has taken a lead in developing scientific links with other countries, notably in Asia. Activities like these require long-term vision and commitment of resources, and the ability to work across New Zealand's institutions – attributes of Centres of Research Excellence that are of increasing value to the country.
The Centre also contributes to, and benefits from, an extensive network of national and international collaborations built by our investigators over a number of years. Research supported by the Centre has strengthened many of these existing links and helped to establish new collaborations.
Networking with countries
Asia Region
The Centre is building links across the Asia region, including with major industrial capitals. As a national Centre of Research Excellence it provides international scientists with a single “shop window” for New Zealand expertise in areas such as immunology and drug discovery – fields in which we have particular strength – and in turn enables local scientists to access the international arena.
China
The Centre is building strategic links with China in biomedical science, at the institute, region and state level. This was a particular focus in 2012 and culminated that year with an official visit by State Councillor LIU Yandong, now a Vice-Premier of the People’s Republic of China. In 2018, the Centre hosted another official visit by the Party Secretary of Guangdong Province, His Excellency LI Xi and other high level dignitaries.
Since 2012, the strong relationship has included reciprocal scientific delegations, visits by national and provincial leaders from China, and other Chinese government representatives.
