Professor Mark Walker is a National Health and Medical Research Council L3 Investigator Fellow based at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience within The University of Queensland. His research focuses on the mechanism by which group A streptococcus (GAS) causes invasive disease, with the dual aims of tracking GAS outbreaks and developing GAS vaccines. Diseases caused by GAS range from pharyngitis and mild skin infections to severe diseases such as septicemia and toxic shock syndrome. GAS also trigger post-streptococcal sequelae such as streptococcal glomerulonephritis and rheumatic heart disease.
